2010-11 Season Tyke Program Information

Clarkson is looking forward to another fun year of Timbits Tyke hockey. Clarkson’s “Initiation to Hockey Program” is offered to children ages 4 - 6 years of age who are interested in learning how to play hockey.

Sponsor: Tim Hortons is the sponsor of the Clarkson Tyke teams
The Timbits Minor Sports Program is a community-oriented sponsorship program for children four to eight years old who participate in local house league sports teams. The program's philosophy is not based on winning or losing - but on learning a new sport, making new friends, and just taking time out to be a kid.

 Program Basics

Clarkson runs the Hockey Canada Initiation Program, which develops specific hockey-related skills during practices. The whole Tyke program is all about fun and learning, and the coaches all work to ensure this is the main goal at all times!

The Tyke program consists of six teams of boys and girls made up of 4, 5 and 6-year-olds. It is not a pre-requisite that players have a background in skating, but some experience on the ice is usually beneficial even if the player has only attended a few public skates or a Parent/Tot session with the City.

The Tyke Program runs from late-September through to the end of March. In September we will have 2 evaluation sessions in order to "start" players at the appropriate skill level.

Basically, each of our 6 teams consists of 3 lines - a Red line, a White line and a Blue line. The Red line are the more developed players, through to White and then Blue. Every effort is made to ensure that each child plays with and against players of his or her own skill level. Children can move up or down between colours as the year progresses, depending on his or her own development.

In the week between the evaluation sessions and the start of the season, we have a parent's meeting to introduce the coaches, distribute information, talk about the program and answer any other questions in one of the meeting rooms at Clarkson Arena.

Registration

Registration is limited to 96 players. Every year we always have more players interested than we can accommodate, so don’t delay and register today!

Cost

The cost of the Tyke program is $375 for 2010 & 2011. This cost includes all expenses related to ice time for both practices and games (i.e. the are no additional gate fees for games) plus each player will receive a team jersey and socks, a team and individual photograph, the year-end banquet and a personalized trophy.

Weekend Practices and Games at Clarkson Arena

All hockey is played at Clarkson Arena, with each team having a weekly 50 minute practice Saturday morning at either 9:00 am or 9:50 am and a weekly 45 minute game on Sunday mornings at either 11:00 am, 11:50 am or 12:40 pm.   Practice times are fixed for each team throughout the season and game times vary based on a weekly rotation.

Tyke Game Rules

1.       All players must wear full equipment, helmet, mask and hockey neck-guards etc., and equipment must be CSA approved.

2.       Each game consists of three 15-minute periods with a three-minute buzzer system.

3.       The teams are separated into 3 equal calibre lines so that all players play against their own skill level. (Red, White and Blue)

4.       All players will have equal playing time.

5.       One player is goalie for the entire game. The role of goalie rotates weekly throughout the team such that every player that so wishes will have an opportunity to play goal during the season.

6.       There are no icing calls. The offside rule is enforced after Christmas for the Red line only.

7.       Penalties will only be called on a flagrant foul (i.e. slashing, cross-checking, high-sticking, etc.). The penalty will be the remainder of the shift.

8.       While players are encouraged to score as many goals as possible, only 1 goal per player per game is counted towards the final score of the game.

9.       While we keep score during the game, we do not track individual statistics or league standings

10.   The scoreboard will never show more than a 3 goal differential. .

11.   All teams will participate in "Grand Finale Sunday".

12.   Finally and most importantly, we commit to making sure that all players enjoy their experience of playing organized hockey.

Christmas Family Skate and Year End Banquet

We also have two extra curricular events at Clarkson that are great events for the children. One is our traditional Christmas Family Skate and our Year End Banquet. At the Christmas Family Skate, Tyke practices near Christmas are replaced with an invitation to every Tyke player and their entire family to come out and hit the ice for a great morning of family fun. Everyone is encouraged to bring goodies for the bake table and drinks for the kids. Santa shows up and has a little something for all the kids including players’ brothers and sisters!

The Year End Banquet is held following the last game of the season and all players are treated to a pizza lunch with their team and everyone on every team receives a trophy with their name on it.

Volunteers Needed!

Our program is only as good as the volunteers that help, and we need to hear from anyone that can help, be it coaching, helping on the ice, or administratively. If you are interested in helping out please let your coach know!
